In Puerto Rico, over the past 13 years, 44% of all public schools were closed and/or abandoned because of social and environmental factors. School closures carry high social and economic costs for people across communities. Thus, dozens of community groups in Puerto Rico are organizing to acquire, renovate, and transform abandoned schools into community centers in various locations. To date, there has been limited institutional and public policy support for transforming abandoned schools into community centers. The goal of the project is to propose cost-effective solutions for rehabilitating abandoned schools into sustaiable and resilient community centers by applying LCA, system modeling, and optimization.
